Throughout its history, Converse has consistently showcased its commitment to honoring and uplifting diverse communities. Known for its annual capsules celebrating various causes and communities, like the LGBTQIA+ collections, the brand is again stepping forward for Latino Heritage Month by introducing the "Mi Gente" collection.
This year's "Mi Gente" collection brings forward the One Star Ox and the iconic Chuck Taylor All-Star, both reimagined to reflect Latinx heritage and traditions. Converse's up-and-coming skater, Erik Herrera, and his family are prominently featured in the campaign. Their participation pays tribute to the resilience, tenacity, and hope often synonymous with Latin American families and communities. The designs, envisioned by Converse's Latin American team members, encapsulate healing, protection, and foresight themes.
The One Star Ox sports a harmonious burnished brown upper, a nod to the ancient tradition of reading coffee grounds. Additionally, the shoe's tongue beautifully captures the essence of the Black Butterfly, symbolizing migration and metamorphosis. On the other side, the Chuck Taylor All-Star draws its inspiration from the restorative powers of nature. Intricate designs of chamomile flower, aloe, and linden tea flowers gracefully adorn its canvas upper, coupled with a subtle mint footbed. Both sneakers are accentuated with metallic silver "Sana, Sana" lace dubraes, nodding to the phrase “Sana, Sana Colita de Rana” (“heal, heal, little frog’s tail” in English), which is used to comfort children when they’re hurt.
The Converse Mi Gente Collection is set to release on September 15, 2023, through Converse and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the One Star Ox will retail for $80 while the All-Star Hi is priced at $75.
