Dating back to the 80s, the New Balance 574 was birthed from the Steven Smith-designed New Balance 576 by scaling down the tech within the sneaker and creating a more affordable lifestyle model. While Smith took his talents over to Yeezy, the Boston-based brand has continued to seek out influential designers, and in so, created their Tokyo Design Studio. Pushing the boundaries of conventional designs, the in-house design team blends new school and classic design language to create elevated takes on some of the most iconic NB silhouettes, like the aforementioned 574 that has appeared in "Vachetta Tan."
Turning the lifestyle sneaker into a more high-end luxury silhouette, the upper comes covered in premium leather that gets a vachetta tan makeover with white stitching details, while underlays on the toebox and collar feature a cream-colored textured canvas material. This same shade makes its way to the tongue and lace set, while forgoing any branding details on the said area. One of the only visible hits of NB comes via the leather heel tab, featuring debossed “New Balance” text, while the rubber overlay below gets the classic “NB” logo. On the insole, New Balance Tokyo Design Studio makes its only appearance via a graphic stamped atop the foam cushioning in black, while the sockliner nearby comes in a plush cream-colored suede. Underfoot, a tri-toned white, cream, and grey midsole gets paired with a grooved V-shaped rubber outsole featuring Vibram technology.
The New Balance 574 Tokyo Design Studio Vachetta Tan is set to release on November 19th, 2022 through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, this more premium take on the silhouette will retail for $200.
