Nike's tradition of commemorating sports legends continues to honor the baseball icon Jackie Robinson with a new rendition of the Nike Air Max 1 '86 OG. Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was instrumental in the sports world and the United States as a whole with his contributions to the civil rights movement. This special edition Air Max 1 follows in the footsteps of previous tributes, including the Nike Dunk Low, Air Force 1, and a PE edition of the AJ5 made for MLB players.
This Air Max 1 '86 OG combines suede, perforated nubuck, and nylon, creating a premium feel and look. The white mudguard contrasts the navy details, representing the classic Brooklyn Dodgers uniform. A metallic gold lace dubrae features a Swoosh and the number 42, Robinson's jersey number, which has become synonymous with his legacy. This number is also elegantly placed next to a metallic gold eyelet on the tongue, a nod to his enduring impact. We see a feather embroidered in a tonal navy hue along the Swoosh.
The sneaker's insole is designed like a commemorative plaque, detailing the inspiration behind the design and marking the date of Jackie Robinson Day 2024, further solidifying its significance. Completing the tribute is the white Air Max 1 '86 midsole, which houses the larger 4-chamber Air unit in the heel and a gum and navy outsole.
The Nike Air Max 1 '86 OG Jackie Robinson will release on April 15, 2024, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is $150.
