A Brief History of the Nike Mac Attack

Updated at Published

Nike has a rich history of iconic sneakers that have left an indelible mark on the footwear industry. One such sneaker is the Nike Mac Attack, John McEnroe's signature sneaker that's slated to return for the first time ever. With its name shortened to merely the Nike Attack, the highly anticipated comeback looks to make the retro tennis shoe one of the defining silhouettes of 2023. In preparation, we delve into the history of the sneaker, explore the reasons behind the name change, and discuss the highly anticipated releases of the Mac Attack by Nike.

Initially introduced in 1984, the Nike Mac Attack quickly became a symbol of style and athletic prowess. This groundbreaking sneaker was known for its cutting-edge design, innovative features, and unrivaled performance. But above all else, it was the signature sneaker of John McEnroe — there on his feet during all his rage-fueled glory. The Mac Attack's popularity soared, gaining a cult-like following among athletes and sneaker enthusiasts alike.

Although McEnroe was recently seen wearing an upcoming pair of the Mac Attack on a pickleball court, he no longer has a contract with Nike. So in what's standard practice for sneaker brands when one of its athletes departs, Nike has changed the name for the releases going forward. The Mac Attack is now just the Attack — but that won't stop everyone outside of Nike from continuing to refer to it as the former.

The re-release of the Nike Mac Attack has sneakerheads buzzing with excitement. Nike has spared no effort in preserving the essence of the original while infusing it with contemporary elements. The sneaker retains its distinctive silhouette through sleek lines, shape, quality, materials, and eye-catching colorways, which should make it an instant classic.

Travis Scott and LeBron James were both spotted wearing the Mac Attack in 2021, as Nike was likely gauging public interest in a return for the silhouette. Two years later, we've confirmed that both collaborative and general release versions are coming. Nike is set to keep the Mac Attack somewhat limited, is it did when it brought the Dunk back recently. All releases currently on the books are reserved for the SNKRS app and NBHD retailers. NBHD accounts are local retailers that use community-driven releases to pair a charitable component with coveted kicks. Collaborations will also drop at their respective retailers, with Social Status' releasing via The Whitaker Group's family of stores, which also includes A Ma Maniére, Prosper, and APB.

Collaborations with fashion icons and streetwear brands like Social Status will introduce unique interpretations of the Nike Mac Attack, blending the sneaker's sporting heritage with cutting-edge style. These collaborations will offer a fresh perspective on the iconic silhouette, incorporating new materials, patterns, and color schemes. Social Status has introduced wear away components for the Mac Attack, which are always popular and allow the sneaker to take on a new appearance as its top layers are scuffed up.

In addition to collaborations, Nike will roll out exclusive releases of the Nike Mac Attack in highly coveted colorways. Sneakerheads can expect a range of vibrant hues, bold patterns, and subtle monochromatic options to suit individual tastes and styles. The OG grey, black, and white pair is set to drop as one of the first releases. Also in the pipeline for GRs are "Red Crush" and another OG in black and white.
