UPDATE: Following the closing of the Hanon storefront in June, the retailer has officially announced it will cease operations on October 27. They cited "a culmination of factors outwith our control" and "Increased economic pressures exasperated by the pandemic and a shifting retail landscape" as reasons for the closing. Check here for a full breakdown on the closing. Below is the original story.
The retail landscape continues to face a significant shift, as the prominent U.K. boutique Hanon has announced the permanent closure of its flagship store in Aberdeen. This decision mirrors a broader industry trend, with several major brands including Foot Locker signaling their intention to close numerous physical stores. Hanon officially ceased operations of the Aberdeen store June 10.
Hanon, which has been a cornerstone of the U.K. streetwear scene since 1993, has attributed its decision to a mix of factors, including "increased economic pressures exacerbated by the pandemic and a shifting retail landscape.” However, the retailer will continue its online business as usual, signifying the wider pivot towards e-commerce in response to changing consumer habits.
This announcement from Hanon follows the news of Foot Locker's planned closure of up to 400 mall locations by 2026 and wellgosh's decision to shutter its entire business in February. It's clear the physical retail landscape is undergoing significant transformations as brands adjust their strategies to stay competitive and relevant in an increasingly digital world.
Despite these changes, the sense of community that Hanon fostered over the last three decades is something it cherishes and appreciates. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers and everyone who supported us over the last 3 decades, especially the people of Aberdeen and across the North East," the announcement read. "Thank you for the friendships and to the community who championed the shop, helping us build a spirit befitting of an independent retailer."
While we navigate this period of change, let's honor the memories created and the community spirit that Hanon and similar physical retailers have fostered.
