adidas Basketball is now experiencing a renaissance as the brand’s signature athletes, like Anthony Edwards and James Harden, have seen significant success with their performance basketball sneakers. Outside of their signature series of kicks, we’ve also seen a return to the futuristic design language pioneered in the late ‘90s and early 2000s by adidas, which was spearheaded back then with Kobe Bryant’s signature sneakers. Even after a move to Nike, we’ve seen adidas bring back his kicks like the iconic Crazy 8 throughout the years, but 2024 is marking a first for Kobe’s first signature sneaker: a low-top makeover.
Debuting here in collaboration with Hoop York City, the women’s-focused basketball community founded in 2018, which has since become a primary partner for adidas Basketball, the Crazy 8 Low is as you’d expect it to be. The upper retains its general shape with the Three Stripes logo cleverly incorporated into the overlays along the midfoot, with most of this colorway doused in a legend ink hue. White accents pop on the midfoot and along the adidas text on the tongue. Contrasting these two hues are hits of green, found on the adidas mountain logo on the toe, tongue, and nylon straps on the heel. Besides the noticeable change to the height of the sneaker, adidas has removed the pull tabs on the tongue and heel and the nylon straps that ran across the collar. Underfoot, the same sole unit from the OG is present with an EVA cushioning setup paired with a torsion system in the outsole.
The Hoop York City x adidas Crazy 8 Low was released today, September 1, 2024, and is currently available on adidas.com. Retailing for $120, the sneaker comes in unisex sizing.
