MSCHF recently released their Wavy Baby silhouette with Tyga and were hit with a cease and desist letter swiftly by Vans, though it seems they’re open to collaboration with them. It appears that the brand is ok with those that “heavily borrow” from other copyright designs, with Imran Potato getting his own collection with the California skate brand.
Imran puts his distinct exaggerated design on two mainstay Vans silhouettes, the Sk8-Hi and Old Skool. On the Sk8-Hi, construction remains the same as any standard pair would with a canvas upper covered in accenting stitching, though Imran throws a cartoon hand design across the profile in a style similar to his Caveman Slippers. Potato Vans branding takes over the branding details on the tongue and the heel tab, finished off by the white vulcanized rubber midsole and gum rubber outsole featuring a foot design in black.
On the other hand, the Vans Old Skool appears in three colorways, a typical black/white combo, an all-black look with faint leopard print, and a leopard print covered upper. The silhouette gets beefed up with chunkier cushioning found on the fat tongue and sockliner while the laces and profile stripe continue the exaggerated look, coming much larger than a standard pair. As with the Sk8-Hi, branding details opt for the Potato Vans look, embroidered on the heel and tongue tag. Finishing the look is the vulcanized rubber midsole and gum outsole borrowing the same foot design in black.
Special packaging nods bad to the old school days with a zebra patterned box mimicking a composition book alongside notebook paper as the shoe paper. Included with each pair is multiple sets of colored laces, allowing you to give your exaggerated kicks a custom feel.
The Imran Potato x Vans Collection is set to release on May 18th via Imran Potato's website, followed by a global release on Vans and select retailers on May 21st.
