Steven Smith helped create some of the most iconic "dad shoe" sneakers of all time, many of which came during his time at New Balance. His final send-off before parting ways with the company was the 997 silhouette in 1991, which lasted only a short time on the market before being shelved. However, a retro run from 2014 to the decade's end saw plenty of GR colorways and collaborations. Now, the model is making a solid comeback as part of New Balance's Made in USA line, spearheaded by Teddy Santis. Alongside the pairs part of the seasonal collection, GR renditions like the previously seen Grey colorway will launch alongside this Black rendition.
The New Balance 997 Made in USA Black edition features premium materials highlighting the craftsmanship synonymous with the Made in USA Collection. The upper is constructed from luxurious pigskin suede, which covers the mudguard, midfoot, and heel in a rich black hue. This monochromatic theme extends to the mesh on the toebox, giving the sneaker a clean and streamlined look. Adding a touch of contrast, pebbled leather details in grey adorn the vamp, tongue, and collar.
The iconic N logo on the side is also grey, bordered by a white leather outline, creating a subtle yet striking accent. Further white details appear on the sockliner, New Balance branding on the tongue, and the lace set. Completing the design is a white and cream midsole that provides comfort and stability, paired with a black and grey rubber outsole for traction and durability.
The New Balance 997 Made in USA Black will release in 2024 through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. The retail price has yet to be announced.
