Coming off the WNBA's largest-ever round of funding, Nike has come out to publicly announce that they have an equity in the league. The two previously came together last year announcing a 25 year partnership which included helping bolster female athletes both on and off the court. The Swoosh is now aiming to do more for the league and women in sports-focused careers.
Back in 2019, the WIN (Women In Nike) program was set up by Nike to take retired WNBA athletes and provide them with relevant and dynamic work experience. While this was just the start, the Swoosh is now working to “…grow the league itself by deepening WNBA storytelling…” alongside efforts to increase visibility and bring more girls into the sport of basketball. Grassroots efforts are already in place to bring more female athletes to the sport through the Nike-partnered Game Growers which gives tools to middle school girls to encourage more girls in their communities to play basketball.
These efforts are only set to grow with their monetary investment increasing the ties between Nike and the WNBA. The Swoosh is committed to accelerating the growth of the WNBA and female athletes across the board. According to Nike themselves “WNBA players should feel the benefits of the increase in capital and capacity at the league level — now and in the future.”
