Dating back to 2004, Nike and Doernbecher have been able to raise more than $33 million dollars together, for the OSHU hospital. Both Oregon natives, they continue their partnership with the unveiling of the Nike x Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection, featuring six silhouettes designed by six OSHU patients. For this year, the theme is I'mPOSSIBLE. Included in the latest Nike DB Collection are the Nike Cortez, Nike Air Max 1 '86 OG, Nike Dunk High, Nike Go Flyease, Nike ACG Mountainfly 2 Low, and Air Jordan 3. Each pair was designed during a nine-month process, where the patients worked side-by-side with Nike design volunteers to bring their stories to life. Follow along as we break down each patient and their design.
Macey is a spirited teenager who carries a unique blend of passion for baking and a love for American Sign Language. Despite being diagnosed with a brain tumor at a young age, her resilience has been unwavering. She not only navigated multiple surgeries and ongoing medical challenges but also managed to infuse positivity into every aspect of her life. This is perfectly encapsulated in her flower-themed Nike Dunk High shoes, which carry her signature chocolate chip cookie recipe—a testament to her warmth and generosity. Her apparel and accessories include a crossbody bag decorated with her name in chenille and the exact phrase found on the sole of the shoe, “She believed she could so she did,” as well as a hoodie with a floral Swoosh.
Garrett's story is one of strength from the outset. Born 15 weeks premature and weighing a mere one pound and seven ounces, his early days were marked by a rigorous fight for survival in the NICU. As he grew, he not only overcame health challenges but also developed an interest in science and an endearing fondness for hats. His shoe design is a poignant tribute to the Pacific Northwest's beauty and a heartfelt remembrance of his twin brother, Cooper, who tragically didn't make it past their early days in the NICU. Apparel in the collection includes a Windrunner Jacket that features Zeus, a nod to his most-wanted superpower (controlling the weather), and a hat that hosts chess pieces, referencing the game he loves playing with his grandpa.
Next, there's Chris, whose journey took a tragic turn when a severe accident rendered him with significant health challenges, including the loss of his left leg. But Chris's spirit remained undeterred. Today, he immerses himself in the intricacies of Japanese culture, delves deep into woodworking, and excels in advanced math. His kimono-inspired Nike Go FlyEase shoes reflect his interests and his journey of recovery. Through every challenge, Chris's faith, family, and gratitude towards the medical professionals who aided his recovery have been his pillars of strength. For his apparel, Chris’ jersey represents his favorite NFL team, the Las Vegas Raiders, while also featuring a reference to his nickname “Dude” and panda footprints that lead to a portal that nods to his happy place.
Sydney Little, a talented young swimmer with a flair for art, faced a setback in 2020 when diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Despite challenges, with Dr. Hoffman's support from Doernbecher, she's determined to become a Division 1 swimmer. Sydney's unique Nike Cortez, adorned with her hand-drawn artwork, showcases interchangeable features, a Hawaiian-inspired hibiscus flower and an internal sunset print replicating her painting. The collection, featuring a Nike Boxy T-Shirt and Phoenix Fleece Pant, prominently highlights the motivational phrase "Keep Swimming."
Hugo, born with a distinctive disorder leading to large birthmarks and abnormal growth, faced bullying in his early years. Embracing his uniqueness, he designed an Air Jordan 3 Retro, underlined by the message, "It's okay to be different," also tattooed on his father. The sneaker showcases vibrant green and blue drips, honoring his nickname "Juice" and the Seattle Seahawks. Additionally, a 24-carat gold-plated logo tag stands out, highlighting his penchant for style. Matching Jordan Flight Fleece Pullover Hoodie and Pants will accompany the AJ 3. Beyond his passion for design, Hugo dreams of owning a barbershop and actively promotes the acceptance of individual uniqueness, urging others to stand tall against adversity.
Hailey, fondly termed the "Queen of Hearts," faced medical challenges from birth, with an atypically formed heart leading to multiple surgeries. However, her zest for life and impeccable style shine brightly. As a testament to her fashion-forward approach, Hailey has crafted the Nike Air Max 1 ’86 sneakers. This footwear dazzles with a vibrant pink hue inspired by her doll collection, gold accents reflecting her radiant personality, and a detachable gold chain bracelet with versatile charms. The shoe also showcases an anatomical heart logo and motifs, symbolizing her unique cardiac journey. Alongside the Air Maxes will be a matching Club Fleece Full Zip Hoodie and Backpage. Aspirations for her future include nursing, inspired by the compassionate care she's received at Doernbecher. Her footwear is not just fashion but a message of hope for others with similar challenges.
