It’s no secret that Ye has an affinity for higher fashion. Dating back to his producer days with Rocafella in the early 2000s, Ye was known as the Louis Vuitton Don, sporting a Louis Vuitton monogram backpack everywhere he went. Eventually, Ye was able to collaborate on multiple Louis Vuitton sneakers in 2009, introducing him to the high fashion world.
As his career expanded beyond music, many came to know Ye for his fashion brand, Yeezy. Today, it's one of the world's hottest brands having collaborated with adidas, the Gap and now completing the trifecta with YZY GAP Engineered by Balenciaga. The goal is simple for Ye and Demna (the creative director of Balenciaga and Ye’s longtime friend): produce high quality fashion pieces that can reach the masses at an affordable price.
Over the second half of 2021, Ye has been seen everywhere with at least one piece of Balenciaga clothing attached to his person, even tapping Demna to “engineer” the merch from his most recent album Donda. Many believed something was in the works between the two fashion giants. With a formal announcement coming via Ye’s Instagram and a Vogue article published the same morning, we now know the first drop for the triple collaboration is coming in June of 2022.
Although the affordability of the products is in question considering the album merch for Donda was priced at 200 dollars for a long sleeve T-shirt, relatively speaking, the collaboration will be much more accessible than a regular Balenciaga piece. We will have to wait and see if the prices on the collection will be able to compete with the likes of normal GAP products.
