Baseball players in 2022 aren’t often thought of when it comes to signature sneakers. If you go back to the 90s, however, you’d find a handful of star players who had their own sneakers with Nike and Jordan Brand. The first that comes to mind is Ken Griffey Jr with his Nike Air Griffey line that still receives retros to this day. In addition to the countless Nike Griffeys that were made for the baseball great, Griffey also received a Jordan 7 PE. Longtime Jordan Brand employee Frank Cooke give us a rare look at the Air Jordan 7 Retro PE for "The Kid"
Inspired by a Foot Locker slam dunk competition that took place back in the 90s and featured Griffey, the sneaker comes in a Seattle Mariners-inspired colorway. Black nubuck makes up the base layer while the overlays are composed of aqua-shaded nubuck, seen around the eyestays, midfoot, collar, and heel. Stark white laces and branding details like the Jumpman logo pop off the black tongue and collar in which each is located respectively. Providing further contrast is the mini Nike Swoosh on the toe and pull tab, coming embroidered in red. Back on the heel, the usual “23” branding remains while the insole features a merging of Griffey’s Swingman logo and a Jordan Jumpman logo. Rounding out the design is the black midsole with white mountain peaks near the toe and heel paired with a rubber outsole that utilizes all three shades found on the upper.
Unfortunately, the Air Jordan 7 Retro Ken Griffey Jr PE won’t be seeing retail shelves anytime soon as this pair pictured is a sample from years back. Hopefully, in the future, we do see some mashup of Jordan Brand and Griffey, but we’ll have to wait and see if that ever goes down.
