To no surprise, Jason Petrie reprised his role as the leading designer on the LeBron 16 (XVI) that was released in 2018. There weren’t many visual changes between the LeBron 15 and LeBron 16— more like improvements. Nike updated the Battleknit fabric used on James’ previous signature model and remodeled the previous Air unit into a full length Max Air unit with embedded Zoom Air pods. The design featured a re-engineered Flyknit upper for durability and breathability, combined with a gusseted leather tongue for comfortable support. The Max Air cushioning was updated with a lower profile and better lateral support. In terms of aesthetics, the diamond-shaped detailing on the upper was a visual embodiment of the multi-faceted nature of LeBron's career and persona.
Key colorways include the 'Fresh Bred,' which launched the line, featuring a black upper and red detailing for a powerful statement. The 'I Promise' colorway was a tribute to the LeBron James Family Foundation and their work in education. One of the most distinctive colorways was the 'What the LeBron,' which mashed up popular elements from previous LeBron models, further cementing the LeBron 16 as a celebration of LeBron's journey with Nike.
