During Japanese fashion label doublet’s Fall/Winter 2024 show, the brand debuted its first footwear collaboration with Asics, tackling the Gel-Kayano 20 silhouette. While these early teasers and a small in-person drop during Paris Fashion Week in June have been all we’ve seen thus far, doublet and Asics are soon launching the collaboration globally. After this launch, official doublet x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 images have emerged.
Masayuki Ino of doublet spoke with Highsnobiety earlier in the year regarding the collaboration. "The idea and idea of the collaboration was to show one color and one material, which is totally opposite of the use of multicolor and different kinds of material approaches that were used for existing GEL-KAYANO." This philosophy is present through the cardboard tan applied to most of the upper, though there are bits of color (and graphics) that make it appear as if a cardboard box was transferred into sneaker form.
According to Masayuki, the Tyvek material will wear down over time after exposure to the elements, gradually changing the texture to look like an actual cardboard box. Elements from an Asics box are directly placed on the upper, such as the size tag displaying the product SKU, shoe size, color code, barcodes, and painted elements. Underfoot, the sneaker comes with a tonal cardboard tan foam midsole, accenting Gel pods in orange near the heel and toe, and a tonal outsole.
The doublet x Asics Gel-Kayano 20 Cardboard will release on November 16, 2024, through doublet, Asics, and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, retail is set at $225.
