The Hoop York City x adidas Rivalry Low Releases October 2024
Fresh off the heels of their adidas Crazy 8 Low, Hoop York City and adidas are back with their next collaborative effort. Usually, when collaborations are announced, there is a focus on a celebrity endorsement or hyped-up product. However, for this upcoming release, adidas continues to focus on community with Hoop York City's rendition of the Rivalry Low.
Founded in 2018, Hoop York City was started by Alex Taylor to give women a safe space to play basketball, connect, and grow in confidence as a community. Immediately taking root, the community has prevailed through the pandemic, and they continue to meet and play regularly on the street and indoor courts of New York City, providing games, training camps, and events all year round. First teaming up with The Brand With The Three Stripes in 2022, the partnership has succeeded, and multiple collections featuring footwear and apparel have been released.
The choice of the silhouette for this new design is no surprise, as the Rivalry Low is one of the most recognizable adidas basketball sneakers, having enjoyed a long and esteemed history to this point. In April 1985, Nike launched their first signature basketball shoe, the Air Jordan 1. It seems crazy to say it now, but the Rivalry was created to directly compete with the latest phenomenon sweeping the globe, with adidas signing Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks to debut the shoe in 1986. Famously, Ewing preferred the adidas Conductor and wore them for most of his NBA games, leading to adidas returning to the drawing board, and in 1987, with improved support for the ankles, the Rivalry 2 Low launched. The Rivalry 2 is now the shoe you know as the Rivalry Low, with the OG Rivalry recently reissued under the Rivalry 86 moniker.
The Hoop York City x adidas Rivalry Low sports a smooth and supple off-white leather upper, with a flash of purple at the back heel, top plastic eyelets, and laces. Bold Pink hues are vividly utilized for the Three Stripes on the sides, sockliner, and portion of the midsole. Trefoil branding is on the back heel tabs, with co-branded insoles, while the tongue tags proudly boast Hoop York City. A cream-white rubber sole completes the design.
The Hoop York City x adidas Rivalry Low is set to release on October 1, 2024. They will be available via adidas and select retailers in-store and online.
