New Balance struck gold when the brand revived the 2002R, especially its highly acclaimed Protection Pack variant. Designer Yu Wu reimagined the 2002R into what he dubbed a "wearable relic," incorporating deconstructed elements that perfectly leaned into modern-day DIY and aged aesthetics. As we continue to navigate through the early parts of 2024, New Balance is poised to extend this coveted design language to a new-yet-familiar silhouette, the 2002R Mule, infusing it with the same charm and distinct aesthetic that made the Protection Pack a must-have for sneaker collectors. Previously, the 2002R Mule had a run of colorways in 2022, including a collaboration with SNS.
The upcoming New Balance 2002R Mule Protection Pack mirrors the iconic Rain Cloud colorway, maintaining the celebrated features of its predecessors. The mule transformation introduces a slip-on design without compromising on style or substance. Jagged-edge suede panels in a palette of greyscale hues offer a tactile and visually engaging experience. The omission of laces for a mule silhouette emphasizes ease of wear, while the suede tongue and perforations add to its breathability and comfort. Key elements like the grey mesh base and nubuck toebox overlays are retained, ensuring the sneaker's lineage is unmistakable. The design is rounded off with a cream midsole and black outsole, staying true to the essence of the Protection Pack while offering a fresh twist.
The New Balance 2002R Mule Protection Pack will release in 2024 through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. As of this writing, the retail price has not been announced.
