Celebrating its 30th birthday, the New Balance 998 is poised for a significant comeback after a few years of dormancy. New Balance first teamed up with Ronnie Fieg’s Kith to kick off this celebration and is now moving to the Teddy Santis-led Made in USA line. As part of Santis’ Made in USA Season 3 collection, the 998 will launch in a “Plum Purple” colorway.
Santis' interpretation of the New Balance 998 is similar to the plush color scheme and material choices of the soon-to-be-released 990v4 Purple Suede. Embodying a rich, deep plum color, the shoe features premium pigskin suede across the mudguard, midfoot panel, and heel. Mesh panels on the toebox and collar adopt a subtly different purple hue, inviting contrasts against the blueish-grey hints on the textured leather overlays. The midfoot is adorned by the "N" logo in a shimmering silver 3M finish. This reflective element contrasts beautifully with the purple laces and lighter purple pebbled leather tongue, which proudly displays the 998 branding in white. The design is brought full circle with a cream, white, and purple midsole working in tandem with a sturdy black outsole.
The New Balance 998 Made in USA by Teddy Santis Plum Purple will release June 29 through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $210.
