Brands throughout the sneakersphere constantly innovate to create brand-new silhouettes with the latest technology in footwear, though consumers often fall back on older retro designs. This is quite evident over at New Balance which has a lineup of staple silhouettes that have been around for decades (see the 99X series) and has made it a priority to revive older models in the archive. Following the revival of the New Balance 550 and 650 models, thanks to Aime Leon Dore, another pair that caught the eye of Teddy Santis is making a return - the New Balance Rainer. While we’re still waiting for ALD to add their touch to the model, multiple pairs of inline colorways have recently appeared.
Two colorways have appeared on New Balance’s servers, a “Grey” and “Tan Blue,” while a “Glazed Ginger” pair has begun to pop up over in the EU. For the first two colorways mentioned, the silhouette comes covered in hairy suede across its mudguard, quarter panel, and heel overlay while the base layer features heavy-duty mesh. These panels contrast each other with tan featured on the overlays and blue on the underlays for the “Tab Blue” look while the “Grey” gets an all-over tonal grey look. Along the quarter panel and tongue tag, “NB” comes embroidered in a matching shade while the eyestays nearby get a metallic D-hook construction and host two-tone laces. The collar’s underlay and overlay switch up the look by featuring a third color, black on the “Tan Blue” and white on the “Grey” colorway, and through its leather construction. Rounding out the look is the white foam midsole paired with a lugged rubber outsole that comes with paint splatter details throughout.
The “Glazed Ginger” pair opts for a more traditional boot construction by coming in brown leather across its overlays and a heavy-duty dark navy canvas along the underlays. Like other Rainer colorways, “NB” branding is featured on the quarter panel and tongue, though the former of the two gets debossed instead of embroidered. Metallic D-rings in black make up the eyestays with tonal brown laces contrasting the deeper brown leather found along the sockliner and collar. Rounding out the look is the all-black foam midsole and lugged rubber outsole.
The New Balance Rainer in Glazed Ginger is currently available through select retailers out in the EU while a worldwide release date is expected by the end of 2022. For the Grey and Tan Blue colorway, they are also expected to launch by the years' end. Releasing in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $190.
