Fans of the Nike Air Max 1 waited a long time for Nike to bring back the silhouette in its true original form. Before the three-chamber Air unit we have become used to, Tinker Hatfield originally designed the sneaker with a larger Air unit in the heel. For its first few months on the market, the Air Max 1 featured this giant bubble, but after QC issues, its design was changed, and pairs were recalled. Fast forward to 2023, and the silhouette’s “Big Bubble” variant returned, and since then, we’ve received plenty of different versions. For its latest makeover, the ‘86 comes with Cosmic Clay accents.
The colorblocking and color palette used here closely mimic the original versions of the Air Max 1, with suede and mesh construction alongside a primarily white and grey color scheme. Cosmic Clay, a reddish-orange hue, takes over the wavy suede mudguard that wraps around the edge of the upper and sole unit and is also featured on the Swoosh resting atop a light pumice suede panel. This grey suede continues on the heel overlay and the vamp, standing out amongst the white mesh base on the toe and collar. As for the use of cosmic clay, it continues on the Nike Air Max branding along the tongue, the TPU eyelet, and the heel’s Nike Air embroidery. This color scheme draws comparisons to the original Sport Red Air Max 1, the first colorway offered on this ‘86 variant. The design is rounded out by a white foam midsole with the Big Bubble four-chamber Air unit in the heel paired with a black and cosmic clay rubber outsole.
