Nike invariably springs to mind when one speaks of running technology, thanks to its pioneering advancements that stretch back to its Blue Ribbon Sports days. Among its trailblazing creations stands the Alphafly NEXT% series, recognized not just for its groundbreaking design but also for its controversial roots — with the first of its line being deemed too technologically superior for elite competition. Transitioning from its controversial debut, the subsequent iterations of Alphafly NEXT% have been within the realms of competitive guidelines. The upcoming Alphafly NEXT% 3 Proto has already proven its mettle. The marathoner Kelvin Kiptum sported these during his record-smashing run at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where he concluded the race in just 2 hours and 35 seconds, shattering Eliud Kipchoge's record by an astonishing 34 seconds.
The Alphafly NEXT% 3 Proto continues the series’ legacy of combining speed with innovation. Although detailed tech specifications remain under wraps, a few design elements are discernible. The silhouette retains the signature thin Flyknit upper, juxtaposed against an ultra-thick foam midsole for optimum cushioning. The knitting becomes finer around the toe and midfoot, transitioning to a denser weave in areas like the tongue and eyestays. Dominating the lateral side is the prominent Nike logo, with a Swoosh that seamlessly extends onto the foam midsole, placed above the visible Zoom Air unit at the heel. The color palette — a crisp white interspersed with vibrant orange and stark black accents — is reminiscent of the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 3 prototype colorway.
The Nike Alphafly NEXT% 3 Proto White Black Orange will release January 3, 2024, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in unisex sizing, the retail price is set at $285.
