In recent years, Nike has made it a focus to pay homage to communities that are often underrepresented in the sneaker world and beyond. Just in the last few months, we’ve seen the Nike Air Trainer 1 and Nike Air Force 1 Low get dressed in Hispanic-inspired motifs that showcase the strength of family in the culture, though Nike isn’t just stopping there. Continuing on the theme of “Somos Familia,” the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos gets thrown into the mix and covers the Nike Dunk High, Nike Air Force 1 Low, Nike Air Max 1, and Air Jordan 1 Zoom CMFT.
This four-pack of sneakers, according to Nike, is a prime example of “Global Express Lane (GEL),” a more localized version of footwear design that takes insights from global cities while speeding up the time between the design of a product and its availability on the market. Across all of the silhouettes and apparel in the collection, Nike symbols merge with illustrations borrowed from the ofrenda (altar), including cempasúchil (marigolds), water, salt, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and candles. The color palette chosen also represents the holiday and traditional Mexican clothing with bright vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow mixed with darker tones like black and brown.
The entire Nike Somos Familia Collection is set to launch globally on October 22nd, 2022 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store with the AF1 Low and Dunk High set to release on Nike SNKRS in the US on October 26th.
