Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE label has made its mark on the fashion industry through its iconic collaborations with Nike, avant-garde design language, and other partnerships worldwide. As the WNBA Playoffs are beginning, the league-leading New York Liberty has announced that OFF-WHITE has signed a multi-year deal to be the Liberty’s first Official Style and Culture Curator.
Previously, OFF-WHITE partnered with AC Milan to create custom uniforms and clothing capsules, though this venture with the Liberty marks OW's first US-based partnership in the sports realm. For the first capsule between Off-White and the New York Liberty, they’ve created a first-of-its-kind varsity jacket and plan to release fashion capsules each season. Alongside this, the duo plans to celebrate and uplift the community around women’s basketball. It will partner with players on the team to celebrate Women’s History Month, Black History Month, and Pride Month.
“Off-White is a catalyst force for change, creating platforms and giving voice to a community of young radicals, groundbreaking talents and unique cultural forces. The New York Liberty are leading the change in the world of sports, demanding attention and being bold. Sport is evolving and women are making history by owning it. We are thrilled to partner with this inspiring team and create together a space that doesn’t exist, by pushing the boundaries to create the future. For everyone.” said OFF-WHITE CEO Cristiano Fagnani.
“WNBA players are being seen as style icons like never before, while also driving culture in previously unimagined ways,” said New York Liberty CEO, Keia Clarke. “This recent shift presents an optimal moment for the New York Liberty and Off-White to come together to push boundaries even further and create new experiences that blend sport, fashion and culture in authentic ways that transcend the basketball court.”
Last night, September 22, during the Liberty’s first playoff game at Barclays Center, the team revealed a custom OFF-WHITE varsity jacket that will be offered to fans for pre-order during select playoff games.
