Louis Vuitton has always been the pinnacle of high fashion. Shocking the world back in 2018, Louis Vuitton chose what many would consider an outsider in the fashion world to run its men’s fashion line when Virgil Abloh took over the then-run-by Kim Jones label. Virgil taking the reins signaled the blending of high fashion and streetwear and was integral in making him a household name.
Following Virgil’s tragic passing in November 2021, Louis Vuitton was still utilizing his work up until the most recent collection (F/W 2023), and rumors have swirled regarding who would replace Abloh as Louis Vuitton’s head designer. Names like Martine Rose, Telfar Clemens, and even Grace Wales Bonner were all being mentioned as possible replacements. According to the Wall Street Journal (and later confirmed by LV), famed hip-hop producer and designer Pharrell Williams is set to take the helm.
With Virgil breaking the barrier for streetwear-focused designers to enter the high fashion space, Pharrell is the second Black American to hold such a high title at a European luxury house. For Williams, his work with Billionaire Boys Club, ICE CREAM, BAPE, and adidas, on top of his taste making abilities, has made him one of the most fashionable individuals on the planet. On top of his experience in the industry, Williams held a close friendship with Abloh whom he may be succeeding, making it a good match.
Louis Vuitton has now confirmed that Pharrell Williams’ appointment to the head of men’s fashion is official. His first collection with LV will be revealed at Men's Fashion Week in Paris next June. How will Williams follow in the footsteps of Virgil going forward?
