The Rukus x New Balance Numeric 440 Voodoo Doll Releases December 2023
PublishedLouisiana-based sneaker retailer Rukus is making a splash in the skateboarding world with its latest collaboration with New Balance's skateboarding division, New Balance Numeric. Known for its deep cultural roots and rich folklore, Louisiana is the perfect inspiration for this unique partnership, and Rukus has creatively drawn from the mystical and historic Voodoo culture. This collaboration reflects a fusion of skateboarding style and cultural homage to the New Balance Numeric 440.
The Rukus x New Balance Numeric 440, aptly named Voodoo Doll, captures the essence of Voodoo culture through its intricate design and material selection. The sneaker features a shaggy suede upper on the toe and heel, symbolizing the texture of traditional Voodoo dolls. The burlap material on the midfoot adds a rustic touch, further emphasizing the Voodoo theme. A standout detail is the side "N" logo, executed in tack-stitched pebbled leather on the outer side and a purely tack-stitched "N" on the inner side, adding a distinct aesthetic to the design.
The tactile experience is enhanced by including buttons sewn onto each heel piece, replicating the eyes of a Voodoo doll. Rukus branding is elegantly placed on the tongue and inside tags, while the retailer’s 103 logo is pressed into the leather heel tab. The insoles feature a custom Rukus vèvè, a symbol used in Voodoo culture, laid over a wood grain graphic, paying homage to the ritualistic aspect of Voodoo practices.
The Rukus x New Balance Numeric 440 Voodoo Doll will release via auction through NTWRK on November 28th, 2023. Rukus will host a pop-up inside Perkins Rowe in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on December 1st for locals. Details on pricing have yet to be announced.
