The latest iterations of the adidas SL 72 RS arrive just in time for the end of the year, continuing the roll-out of the updated silhouette that has taken 2024 by storm. Following marketing campaigns that garnered attention worldwide to a first-time partnership with the Bob Marley estate, it has been a whirlwind of an introduction for the sneaker.
Updating the model was long overdue by adidas. The OG SL 72 was first launched to coincide with the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and was intended to be worn by athletes between events as a light training shoe. Hence the name, with SL an abbreviation for Super Light. The model did incredibly well and has been in some form an ever-constant part of modern seasonal offerings, with renewed interest in the sneaker due to collaborations with Wales Bonner.
This buzz led to the conversation about updating the shoe, as they are narrow and not considered ideal for everyday wear for more than a few hours. So the running team at The Brand With The Three Stripes re-sized some of the specifications, including adding a couple of millimeters of thickness to the midsole, and used different lasts to re-shape them, making them wider and more comfortable to wear, and also leading to the added RS on the name.
This pack exudes retro vibes, with both pairs sharing the same construction. One pair is adorned in warm sand and shadow brown hues in a beautiful chocolate caramel aesthetic. The other pair is enveloped in wonder aluminum and aurora ink, with a perfect complimentary balance. The upper is crafted from smooth perforated leather with overlays of nubuck at the heel, midfoot, and toe area.
A breathable padded fabric tongue carries a classic Trefoil woven tongue tag. Smooth leather is utilized for the lace stay, heel tab, and Three Stripes branding across both pairs, with Trefoil logos on the back heel tabs. Rubber toe guards encase the front of the shoe, and two-tone finishes to the EVA midsole accentuate the color-blending. Both pairs are finished with rubber outsoles for increased grip.
The adidas SL 72 RS in Warm Sand and Wonder Aluminum are set to release on December 1, 2024, via adidas and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men's sizing, retail is $100.
