Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks did what many can only dream of — getting his signature sneaker. Young first signed with adidas in 2018, and since then, he has had three signature sneaker models under the adidas Trae Young lineup. Plans were for the Trae Young 4 to debut in September, but following Sole Retriever reporting that this model would be his last, we are able to confirm that Trae's contract with adidas has expired, and the release of the Trae Young 4 has been canceled.
While we don’t know the exact details of Trae’s deal with adidas, we know that in 2018, the duo agreed to a four-year contract, but the deal was restructured in 2020 when he signed a “multi-year” extension. After debuting his first model, the Trae Young 1, in Fall 2021, Trae has unveiled a new iteration each year. The Trae Young 2 debuted in 2022 and dropped the Trae Young 3 last September. His contract expired before the start of the current NBA season, in which he was spotted wearing ANTA and Jordan Brand sneakers.
The writing was already on the wall for Trae's departure from The Three Stripes. Internal documents and catalogs for upcoming basketball products had no mention of Trae Young on the brand's roster, and sources have told Sole Retriever his line was one of the lower-performing sellers. It's important to note that Trae's sneakers are still available to purchase on adidas' website, and for a deep discount at that.
Six colorways of the adidas Trae Young 4 were set to release in Holiday 2024, while another six were slated for Spring 2025. However, they are now canceled.
