Archival revivals have proven a major success for brands across the footwear industry, especially the extensive amount of mesh runners that have returned from the dead. For Asics, the last half-decade has seen them bring back models like the Gel-Kayano 14 and Gel-Kayano 20, two retro performance models that have slid right into the modern-day sneakerhead’s wardrobe. As the brand is beginning to bring forth GR colorways of the Kayano 20, Sole Retriever can confirm that the Gel-DS Trainer 14 is the next Asics model to make a comeback.
The Gel-DS series started in 1995 and was designed as a silhouette for high-mileage roadrunners. Key features of the original model included DuoSole (where the DS moniker comes from) on the outsole and DuoMax dual-density midsole. Each year, alongside new iterations of running models like the Gel-Kayano, Asics introduced updates to the series but eventually stopped after the Gel-DS 26 in 2022/2023. Akin to other mesh runners from this era, the Gel-DS Trainer 14, launched in 2009, features a techy design language with multiple mesh panels reinforced with synthetic leather panels. The model shares some design details similar to the GT-2160, Gel-1130, and its cousin, the Gel-Kayano 14, originally released a year before the Gel-DS Trainer 14. So far, two colorways have been spotted, one in Triple White and the other in Mint Green.
The Asics Gel-DS Trainer 14 will launch via Asics and select retailers online and in-store in the coming months. As of this writing, the retail price for this retro has not yet been revealed.
