Founding Awake NY back in 2012 while also managing the brand direction of Supreme, Angelo Baque has grown this fledgling fashion label into a collaborative juggernaut who has most famously linked up with Asics on regular occasions. Having put their touch on various GEL silhouettes over the last few years, Baque and Awake NY are finally getting a crack at designing a brand new silhouette from the Japanese footwear label - the Awake NY x Asics GEL-NYC.
In a quote to Sneaker Freaker, Angelo stated “The GEL-NYC represents the first time we were able to create a new silhouette. It’s not something designed from scratch, but we went into the ASICS archive and mixed a little bit of new technology with a little bit of older design.” And that they did as the sneaker resembles something you’d typically find from Asics with its multi-paneled and multi-material approach taking on mesh, leather, and suede across its upper. Spotted in two colorways (A Purple Tan look and Blue Pink look), the base mesh and suede overlays above this come in a tonal grey finish with the accenting hits appearing on the mudguard, eyestays, and back on the heel. Awake NY makes its mark back on the lateral heel with embroidered text while Asics branding is found atop the tongue and back on the heel tab. Underfoot sits a matching midsole with GEL cushioning paired with a black rubber outsole.
The Awake NY x Asics GEL-NYC is set to release in January 20th, 2023 through Awake NY’s New York flagship store and online while a wider launch will go down during Paris Fashion Week (which takes place from the middle to the end of January).
