When the Nike Dunk was first released back in the mid-1980s, The Swoosh’s marketing team decided to link the low-top basketball sneaker with a handful of college athletic programs in their Be True To Your School campaign. As such, the humble Dunk has forever been linked with colleges. Now in 2022, Nike is looking to a slew of HBCUs for colorways on the silhouette. Already appearing in a Clark Atlanta University makeup, the latest Nike Dunk Low to appear comes in a colorway inspired by the alumni of Florida A&M University.
Taking on the colors of FAMU, the silhouette is dressed in smooth leather across both its overlays and underlays. On the toebox, midfoot, collar, and tongue, a cream white is utilized, contrasting the orange hue seen on the mudguard, eyestays, laces, and heel overlay. Along the lateral side of the forefoot, COLAC embroidery in green represents the university's nickname as the “College of Love and Charity.” Working up the mesh tongue you’ll find the Nike branding usually found on the tongue tag is replaced with a graphic of the school's mascot, an orange and green shaded rattlesnake. On the reverse of the tongue tag, text paying homage to the school is present. The Nike Swoosh located on the midfoot gets a snake green makeover, working back to the heel tab and its 1887 embroidery, paying homage to the year FAMU was founded. Just below this, “We Are Different” text in a green embroidery is added. Rounding out the look is the cream-colored midsole paired with a semi-translucent rubber outsole with a tie-dye orange and green graphic placed underneath.
The Nike Dunk Low FAMU is slated to release in 2022 through select retailers near the FAMU campus in Tallahassee, Florida with an online release through Nike going down on October 22nd, 2022. Releasing in men's sizing, the retail price is set at $120.
