It wouldn’t be until May 1971 that the company Blue Ribbon Sports, founded by University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and one of his athletes, Phil Knight, in 1964, would officially go by the name Nike. While their early days saw the brand import Onitsuka Tiger sneakers from Japan and sling them out of Phil Knight’s car, the new brand produced its first sneaker in 1972 with what is now known as the Nike Moon Shoe. Over 50 years later, the sneaker is finally getting a retail release for the general public, thanks to French fashion designer Jacquemus.

Jacquemus has recreated the iconic sneaker that earned its nickname due to the astronaut-like footprints it left behind as part of the brand’s Fall 2025 Collection. Sole Retriever can confirm that three different colorways are on the way: Off Noir, University Red, and Alabaster, the latter of which is pictured in this article. Recreating the nylon upper, we see alabaster hues cover most of the upper, with the Swoosh logo contrasting in black. Joining the Swoosh in this dark hue are the Jacquemus-branded tongue label and the custom lace aglets, borrowed from previous Jacquemus x Nike projects.

Below, the model appears to have the same thin foam midsole as the original, with a waffle outsole attached. The story goes that his wife’s waffle iron inspired Bowerman to create a traction pattern for Nike’s first sneaker, pouring rubber into the waffle maker to form the prototypes of the waffle outsole.

Around a dozen pairs of the hand-cobbled Moon Shoes designed by Bill Bowerman, the first to feature Nike’s iconic waffle sole tech, were made in 1972. The sneaker debuted in the 1972 Olympic Trails and was never reproduced again, but it did help inspire multiple different Nike sneakers over the years. In 2019, a pair sold for $437,500 at auction, setting a record for the most expensive sneaker purchased.

The Jacquemus x Nike Moon Shoe SP Pack will release in Fall 2025 through Nike, Jacquemus, and possibly through select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is $180. Download the Sole Retriever mobile app to stay updated on the latest releases, raffles, news, and more in the sneaker and streetwear world.
