Considering our lives and personal information are so interconnected to our online presence, it’s no surprise that there are bad actors seeking to access sensitive information through illicit means. Plenty of big brands and large companies have been affected by hackers entering into databases and the latest may affect a large number of sneakerheads who purchased products from JD Sports (and retailers they own) between November 2018 and October 2020.

While there are potentially 10 million customers whose data have been accessed, JD Sports “has no reason to believe that account passwords were accessed” and the brand confirmed to Footwear News that it “does not hold full payment card data.” Information possibly leaked includes name, billing & delivery addresses, email address, phone numbers, and the last four digits of the card on file.

JD isn’t the only company that focuses on footwear that has been affected by a data breach in recent times as StockX suffered from a similar size data breach in 2019 that affected 6.8 million customers.

In a statement to Footwear News, Neil Greenhalgh, CFO of JD Sports, said, “We want to apologize to those customers who may have been affected by this incident. We are advising them to be vigilant about potential scam emails, calls and texts and providing details on how to report these. We are continuing with a full review of our cyber security in partnership with external specialists following this incident. Protecting the data of our customers is an absolute priority for JD.”

In tandem with preventing those trying to bot releases, footwear brands and retailers alike will have to continue to improve on the cyber security front to prevent data breaches like this from happening.
