In the world of sneakers, few names command as much respect and excitement as Kobe Bryant and Nike SB. The Nike Kobe line is a staple in the sneaker and basketball community. Meanwhile, Nike SB is renowned for its innovative and creative designs, maintaining a significant presence in the market. Despite this, recent rumors of a collaboration between Kobe Bryant's estate and Nike SB appear to be just that: rumors.
The speculation began with a post by Ian, one of the owners of the resale shop Private Selection, hinting at a potential Kobe x Nike SB project.
However, this rumor was quickly dispelled. According to a report by Nice Kicks, a reliable source within Nike SB clarified that such a collaboration is "Not confirmed" for 2024, with 2025 being the earliest possible timeframe for any Kobe x Nike SB project. Adding more doubt to the rumor, Vanessa Bryant, who has an agreement with Nike to continue her late husband's signature sneaker line, reportedly "hasn't even seen the project yet."
While the excitement around a potential collaboration is understandable, it's essential to consider the history and existing relationships between Kobe Bryant and Nike SB. Kobe did have connections with the Nike SB world. In 2009, Bryant appeared in a commercial for the launch of Paul Rodriguez's Nike SB Zoom P-Rod III. Additionally, skateboarder Eric Koston received a special edition of the Nike SB Koston 1, designed in the style of the Nike Kobe 6. This edition was limited to 24 pairs, and Nike auctioned off the colorway. A retail version was also released, featuring a Lakers-themed colorway and a less apparent faux reptile skin upper.
Despite these historical ties, the prospect of a Kobe x Nike SB drop in the near future seems unlikely. The sneaker world is often rife with rumors and speculation; while some are accurate, others are not. With key parties like Vanessa Bryant not being involved or even aware of such a project and with official sources from Nike SB dismissing the idea for the next couple of years, fans might have to temper their expectations. However, plenty of regular Nike Kobe releases are on the horizon, including two new Kobe 8 Protro colorways in February, the Court Purple and Radiant Emerald.
