In recent years, New Balance has carved out a significant niche in reviving classic silhouettes, transforming them into modern-day essentials. The New Balance 550's resurgence spearheaded this movement, proving the timeless appeal of New Balance's design ethos. As we enter the back half of 2024, the brand is set to broaden its revival strategy by reintroducing the New Balance 475, a lesser-known gem from the 1980s. This re-release aligns with New Balance's ongoing commitment to blending heritage with innovation, as seen with the scheduled return of the New Balance 1000 from 1999.
Similar to how Steven Smith's 576 design informed the creation of the 574 silhouette, the 475 took inspiration from Smith's Trailbuster sneaker, an outdoor trail-ready hiker. Still, the New Balance 475 has a design reminiscent of the iconic 574 and 576 models, yet it offers a unique silhouette that stands out. For its grand return, the 475 has appeared in three captivating colorways: Green, Purple, and Blue.
Each variant adheres to a consistent design language, featuring premium suede overlays atop a breathable mesh base, executed in a monochromatic theme that speaks to the brand's refined aesthetic sensibilities. A break from the tonal color palette comes via the midfoot overlay, presenting a slightly deeper tone for a subtle contrast. Leather accents on the N logo and a reflective silver 3M heel tab add layers of sophistication and detail. Comfort and durability are assured with a cream foam midsole and a robust black rubber outsole, completing the design with a balance of form and function.
The New Balance 475 will release October 16, 2024, through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men's sizing, the retail price is set at $110.
