Nike’s Air Max lineup has been a major part of Nike’s explosion into the largest sportswear brand on planet earth and it all began with the iconic Nike Air Max 1 back in 1986. When it first hit the market, Tinker Hatfield’s original design featured a much larger visible Air unit than we see today and this is due to production issues Nike experienced during the first run of the silhouette. This made owning a “Big Bubble” pair a rarity and Air Max-heads have been waiting for this rendition of the model to make a return for decades. Now, in 2023, the model has finally returned to the Big Bubble version with the first colorway of the Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 coming in the OG “Sport Red.”
Taking on the OG construction of the model with suede and mesh covering the upper, the classic combo of white, grey, sport red, and black lands in its usual location. Suede panels on the mudguard and Nike Swoosh come in the titular sport red hue while white mesh on the base layer shines through on the toebox and collar. More suede, this time in a shorter-haired variety, is present on the vamp and midfoot panel while the tongue and lace set contrast this with its stark white finish. Other branding details (as well as the TPU eyelets) come in sport red as does the insole while looking down on the sole you’ll see the return of the “Big Bubble” Air Unit surrounded by white foam. Rounding out the design is the black, red, and white rubber outsole. Special packaging for the sneaker comes with an aged, scuffed box featuring a cut-out for the Nike Swoosh on its lid as well as a visual representation of the bigger Air unit on the sidewall of the cardboard.
The Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 OG Sport Red is set to release in March 2023 through Nike SNKRS and select NSW retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $150.
