Nike’s Air cushioning technology has played a pivotal role in the growth of the Oregon-based sportswear label. Before 1987, Air cushioning was hidden below the sneaker's rubber and polyurethane sole unit and wasn’t visible to the naked eye. This changed thanks to legendary designer Tinker Hatfield who created the Nike Air Max 1 and gave us all one of the sneaker industry’s most memorable design details.
This original design differs from the standard Air Max 1 we know today as what has been dubbed the “Big Bubble” version of the model had to be redesigned due to quality control issues. Fast forward over 30 years, and Nike brought back this original design with the Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 OG “Sport Red.” Aside from the variety of golf-ready versions of this OG model, a few other colorways have appeared, including “Smokey Mauve” and “Football Grey Dark Obsidian.” Another colorway has been added to the list, as the Air Max 1 ‘86 OG “Light Silver Anthracite” has just appeared.
Like the other colorways mentioned, the sneaker retains its original design details containing mesh and suede across the upper. Black shades land on the mudguard and Swoosh logo, contrasting the light silver shade dressing the mesh toebox and collar. Greyish-hued suede along the vamp, mudguard, and heel overlay allows the tonal laces, blueish-grey tongue, and TPU eyestays to shine. Back on the heel, we see Nike Air embroidered into the spine in a tonal shade of grey. Our only hit of vibrant color comes placed on the insole with a muted volt green taking over the insert. Underfoot sits a white Air Max 1 “Big Bubble” sole unit with its 4-hole design present in the heel. Rounding out the look is the black rubber outsole below.
The Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 OG Light Silver Anthracite will be released on April 22nd, 2023, through Nike and select NSW retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $160.
