Nike's innovative journey with Air cushioning technology, a brand hallmark, began in 1978 with the Air Tailwind. However, during the late 1980s, Nike, through the genius of Tinker Hatfield, introduced groundbreaking designs like the Air Max 1, showcasing visible Air cushioning for the first time. Another significant creation from this era was the Air Safari, a silhouette that, like its contemporaries, was far ahead of its time.
While sharing similarities with the Air Max 1, the Air Safari distinguished itself with its hidden Air cushioning and its iconic Safari print, inspired by ostrich skin texture. After a brief hiatus, the original colorway of the Air Safari is poised for a comeback in Summer 2024, marking its first re-release since 2018.
The upcoming retro maintains the authentic design elements that made the original a classic, including a combination of leather with different finishes. Smooth and tumbled textures contribute to its premium feel and look, while the sneaker's distinctive Safari print adorns the mudguard, collar, and heel. Contrasting this print are vibrant orange hues on the toe box and sockliner, which boldly offset the black tones of the midfoot, Swoosh, tongue, and lace set. This striking color scheme is completed with a black and white midsole paired with a matching rubber outsole, preserving the essence of the original design.
The Nike Air Safari OG will release July 19, 2024, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Launching in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $140.
