As Springtime nears in Japan, the Setsubun festival is celebrated. It is tradition to get rid of oni (demons) by throwing handfuls of soybeans in homes, temples and shrines across the country. Nike previously released a tribute to this festival back in 2008 with a pack of Nike Court Visions, this time in 2023 the coveted Nike Dunk Low is the silhouette of choice.
Coming in a light brown shade similar to soybeans, the overlays of the Nike Dunk Low "Setsubun" match this earth-toned theme with khaki suede around the eyelet and heel, dark brown suede on the mudguard and Nike embroidered on the back heel tab A mini Nike Swoosh on the mudguard matches the soybean colored base. Along the mid foot, a purple Nike Swoosh with tan piping wrap to the heel counter. Sitting below the end of the Swoosh is a purple colored Japanese demon. To really bring home the Setsubun theme, the insoles feature artwork from Japan's Edo period of a hero in folklore scaring demons away with soybeans. The semi-translucent rubber outsole in an earthy tan closes out this tribute to the traditional Japanese festival.
The Nike Dunk Low Setsubun was originally scheduled to release in February 2022. However, it was delayed a whole year, and will now release on April 11th, 2023. They will be available at Nike, SNKRS, and at select retailers worldwide, both online and in-store. Coming in men's sizing, retail is set at $120.
