Asics has been familiar with the collaborative space, even if the average sneakerhead has only recently begun to pay attention to the brand. The Japanese footwear brand doesn’t have to venture too far for many of its projects, as many local labels have and continue to work with Asics. For its latest Japanese-based collaboration, Asics is teaming up with nonnative, who last worked with the brand on a workboot in 2020.
Tackling the Gel-Terrain silhouette, introduced in January, nonnative applies a material rarely seen on the model — suede. This material makes its mark on the mudguard, Asics tiger stripes, and midfoot panel, all of which come in a brown hue. Tonal shades continue onto the fused TPU along the toe and on the mesh toebox. The tongue also features mesh and suede, though in a contrasting tan hue to match the lace set. Here is where you find Gore-Tex branding, denoting the weather-resistant build of the silhouette, while Asics branding comes debossed just above. Continuing to the spine of the heel, you see Asics and nonnative branding, while the lateral heel comes with the standard Gel-Terrain text. Underfoot sits a brown and tan FlyteFoam and Gel-cushioned midsole paired with a gum and tan rubber outsole.
The nonnative x Asics Gel-Terrain GTX will release on October 19, 2024, exclusively in Japan through nonnative, COVERCHORD, and Kith Tokyo, and Asics online and in-store. A US drop will take place via Packer Shoes and Kith. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at ¥28,000 (approx $190 USD).
