While performing in Miami at E11EVEN, Travis Scott was spotted rocking a pair of Nike Mac Attacks with his signature reverse Swoosh. The silhouette, famously associated with tennis legend John McEnroe, is slated for a revival in 2023, with Social Status collaborating on the tennis shoe in various colors. While the release for this pair was rumored at first, Kicks Finder confirmed the release of the Travis Scott x Nike Attack.
Leading up to this year, some of Nike’s biggest names, LeBron James and Travis Scott included, have been rocking OG pairs of the model from the '80s. Adding even more credibility to the return of the Mac Attack, John McEnroe was seen at a pickleball tournament rocking the original grey and black colorway that dropped earlier this year. Nike has utilized Travis Scott's hype in the past during the revival of archival silhouettes. Previously, Scott brought his design language to two colorways of the Air Trainer.
For Travis’ version of the Mac Attack, the silhouette gets dressed in the OG grey and black colorway, with grey leather and mesh dominating the upper. Black accents can be found on the toebox, collar, and heel, while the iconic reverse Swoosh branding appears in black leather on the lateral midfoot. A blue and black checkerboard pattern adorns the Nike-branded tag atop the tongue. A white rubber midsole and a grey outsole complete the design. It will be interesting to see how Travis Scott's work on the silhouette will add to the hype around the model, considering the release will take place months after multiple colorways hit shelves.
In the lead-up to the Mac Attack QS SP OG release, the Nike Sportswear Instagram account posted campaign images of Scott and McEnroe wearing the colorway. PageSix previously reported that John McEnroe and Scott had met for "hours." Now seeing the ad campaign, it's likely this was the purpose of the meeting.
It's also interesting to see the parallels between Scott and McEnroe, even with the two being from different fields and eras. Both have an intense passion for their craft, McEnroe with tennis and Scott with his music and design, while being non-conformists. Scott has been pushing the boundaries of music and design over the last half-decade, while McEnroe often broke the norms of tennis culture with his outbursts. Nike even directly acknowledged this regarding the marketing campaign featuring Scott and McEnroe as the tagline read "Rebel like the OG." This endeavor from Travis on the tennis legends' silhouette becomes more understandable when considering their mutual passion, nonconformity, resilience, and penchant for stirring up controversy.
The Travis Scott x Nike Mac Attack SP Cactus Jack will release December 13, 2023, via Travis Scott's website. Nike SNKRS and select retailers online and in-store will release the pair on December 19. Releasing in men's sizing, the retail price is set at $120.
