Japanese streetwear label WTAPS is again working with New Balance on a Made in USA sneaker. Last year, the duo joined forces to launch a neutral, understated colorway of the 990v6 and previously worked on the 990v2 and 992. Now, for the latest project, the humble 998, which recently returned in full force, is getting WTAPS’ signature touch.
First glances at the sneaker may conjure up thoughts of a GR you’d find on store shelves across the globe, but WTAPS adds some subtle details and premium materials to differentiate the pair from other 998s. On the base is a woven mesh in a greyscale hue, visible along the toebox and collar, while a tonal grey pigskin suede hits the mudguard, midfoot panel, and heel. Providing some contrast to this tonal grey color palette are hits of navy, located on the trim of the silver N logo, the NB logo on the heel, a TPU panel near the collar, and the 998 branding on the tongue tag. WTAPS adds its branding to the upper via text on the lateral heel and co-branded insole. The textured leather along the vamp, tongue, and tonal lace set finishes the upper. Underfoot sits a navy and cream Abzorb-cushioned midsole paired with a tonal rubber outsole.
The WTAPS x New Balance 998 Made in USA will release on November 8, 2024, through WTAPS online and in-store in Japan. A global release via select retailers will take place on November 15. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is $230. Download the Sole Retriever mobile app to stay updated on the latest releases, raffles, news, and more in the sneaker and streetwear world.
