Constantly innovating, German sportswear brand adidas pushes the boundaries with its latest model, the adidas Zponge. With an insane aesthetic that looks like you're walking on sponges, the new technology promises lightweight cushioning. After first releasing an exclusive triple black colorway through the adidas Confirmed App as part of the launch of Batch 000, this Ice Yellow Core Black iteration will kick off the GR run for the silhouette.
Developing new technologies and techniques is an ongoing process that every major footwear brand constantly invests in, with entire divisions and swathes of creative minds entirely focused on the next breakthrough. While developing a new midsole cushioning, the appearance of this lightweight material gave rise to the name, now christened Zponge. This creation set the stage for the natural marketing step of launching a shoe with the name.
A visit was made to the adidas Archive at Herzogenaurach, and inside the vault, an old track and field shoe called Apollo resides. The design team chose this vintage sneaker to provide the upper for the new silhouette. The adidas Zponge is a case of old meeting new.
A super-lightweight blend of nylon is used to construct the upper in ice yellow hues, contrasted by the wide core black Three Stripes branding on the side, finished with serrated edges. Core Black continues to the padded tongue, collar lining, and lace set. At the rear, a suede overlay provides structural support, and Trefoil branding is seen on the back heel.
Linear adidas branding appears along the midfoot, and a Trefoil tongue tag is on the tongue. Underfoot is where the real magic happens, with the Zponge midsole adorned in focus blue. A translucent rubber sole underneath provides a grip while ensuring durability.
The adidas Zponge Ice Yellow Core Black was released today, December 18, 2024, and is available now via adidas and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in unisex sizing, retail is $130.
