Celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Whitaker Group's most prominent and well-known retail space, A Ma Maniere, James Whitner and co. crafted a six-piece collection of sneakers across Nike Inc.’s family, from Jordan Brand to Nike and Converse. When Whitner initially teased the collection back in August, he stated in his Instagram post, “Thank you to everyone who has believed in us, stood with us, fought with & for us. This 7 piece collection, (that’s not a typo) will help drive everything that really matters.” Many were left wondering what this mysterious seventh pair was, but Whitner unveiled the ultra-limited A Ma Maniere x Converse Chuck Taylor 70 part of the While You Were Sleeping Collection last night.
Whitner was able to do what Virgil Abloh had tried to advocate for when he was working on Off-White’s The Ten collection back in 2017: Adding a Nike Swoosh to the Chuck Taylor. While Chinatown Market technically released a Swoosh-laden Chuck Taylor in 2018, it was an unofficial customized project, with this marking the first time Nike has allowed its iconic logo to grace the legendary silhouette.
Things remain simple across the design, with a premium canvas construction on the side panels and tongue giving way to the custom embroidered sockliner with A Ma Maniere’s “A” logo throughout. Standard Chuck Taylor details remain, like the metallic silver eyelets, white rubber toe cap, and the medial side’s Chuck Taylor All-Star logo. However, as mentioned previously, a large Nike Swoosh has been added to the upper, with the right pair coming in an embroidered finish and the left constructed out of leather.
The A Ma Maniere x Converse Chuck Taylor 70 While You Were Sleeping will likely remain a friends-and-family exclusive as Whitner debuted the sneaker and gifted attendees the pair at an event in London last night. According to Coco Mell, who was in attendance at the event, the pair is limited to 100, 50 pairs for the UK and 50 for the US.
