Though Jordan Brand's roots are firmly placed in American culture, the brand is global and consistently pays homage to the Eastern Hemisphere with collaborations and inline colorways. This latest iteration of the Jordan 1 Mid for children is no exception, as it draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics to teach young sneaker enthusiasts the importance of balance, tranquility, and role models.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid SS Zen showcases a blend of tan, blue, and light pink hues, each color was thoughtfully chosen to evoke a sense of calm and harmony. The sneaker's design intricately incorporates patterns reminiscent of Japanese rock gardens, including the mudguard, eyestays, heel, and collar underlay, adding depth and cultural significance. The tongue of the sneaker features the word "Zen" in English on the left shoe and in Kanji on the right, further emphasizing the theme of mindfulness and cultural appreciation.
The interior tongue continues this motif, dividing the phrases "Inhale" and "Exhale" between the two shoes, a subtle reminder of the importance of breath in achieving a state of Zen. Michael Jordan's iconic Jumpman logo is reimagined in various yoga poses along the medial collar, adding a playful yet meaningful touch. Completing the design is a sail midsole paired with a semi-translucent clear outsole, beneath which lies a sea-like pattern encapsulating the tranquility of ocean waves. The pair comes housed in a global-themed Jordan Box that has been seen on various Jordan Air Ship releases, and the inside hosts a paper with a paragraph asking you to think of the role models in your life.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid SS Zen GS will release in Summer 2024 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in GS, PS, and TD sizing, the sneaker will retail for $120, $80, and $65, respectively.
