Devin Booker Pays Homage to Penny Hardaway’s Nike Air Penny 5 on the Nike Book 1
Published
Devin Booker’s love for all things vintage and retro has bled into his signature sneaker line with Nike, as not only was the Book 1’s design informed by classic Nike sneakers, but the colorways worn by Book and the ones produced for the public have as well. Various PE renditions have been spotted on his feet throughout the last year, many of which take their inspiration from Nike Basketball’s classic models, the latest being Penny Hardaway’s Nike Air Penny 5.
Hardaway’s fifth sneaker (if you don’t count the Foamposite) with Nike is translated onto the Book 1 through updated branding details and color palette, inspired by the Suns colorway, which references Penny’s time with the organization. For the uninitiated, the Penny 5 was released four years after he retired from the NBA and marketed as an off-the-court lifestyle sneaker. We can see the upper takes on the black and grey mixture found on the Penny 5, with grey used on the overlays and black acting as the base.

Suns colors appear on the branding details, like the mini Swoosh on the vamp, the lateral Swoosh, which is transformed to mimic the Penny 5’s logo, and the Penny Hardaway 1 Cent logo atop the tongue of the right shoe. More colors for the organization are found on the sockliner and heel, the latter featuring the sample circular logo on the Penny 5’s heel pull tab. The gradient midsole finishes the design, which mimics the Penny 5 with its purple, pink, and orange finish.
The Nike Book 1 Air Penny 5 Suns PE will not be released to the public as it’s intended to be an exclusive sneaker for Devin Booker.
