When the New Balance 580 was first released in 1996, the silhouette was exclusive to Japan and originally intended to be an offshoot of the US-exclusive 585 trail sneaker. The model’s infancy saw something uncommon for the time — collaborative colorways with sneaker boutiques. New Balance launched over 20 projects with Mad Hectic and mita sneakers on the silhouette. Now, mita sneakers are again being tapped for a collaborative colorway on the sneaker, combining two OG colorways for a new take on the sneaker.
Unlike the triple collab between MARQUEE PLAYER, mita sneakers, and New Balance on the 580, this project keeps things as original as possible on the sneaker. The first two colorways offered on the 580, a Brown Black pair and a Military Green, join forces to create a new offering on the model. The tan hues found on the military-inspired rendition appear on the canvas toebox and tongue, while the overlays from this pair also remain on the mudguard and midfoot.
Below this, black panels appear near the vamp and midfoot, a feature found on the original two colorways. Brown canvas and suede hit the collar and heel overlay directly taken from the Brown Black pair. mita sneakers add a custom chain-link graphic to the insole, a motif commonly found in the retailer’s collaborative work. The white foam midsole finishes the design with a grey ROLLBAR in the heel paired with a black rubber outsole.
