New Balance has a knack for breathing new life into its archival sneakers. Following the successful resurgence of the 550 in 2020 and subsequent hits like the 2002R, 1906R, 650, 860v2, T500, and the recent New Balance 1000, the brand is set to reintroduce an obscure model from the 2010s – the New Balance 740. Launched initially with limited success, the 740 quickly faded from the scene, finding its way to outlets and discount stores. However, with the current trend favoring mesh runners, New Balance is set to capitalize on this demand by launching an updated version.
"The 740 is a true 2000s classic that blends our running heritage with exceptional comfort and style. Much like the shoe, the design process required a delicate balance to introduce new elements while preserving the essence and history of the original model. The updated 740 features some of the same synthetic materials, mesh, and metallic overlays, while introducing new colorways and trim to offer a refreshed contemporary take. The result is a versatile and nostalgic shoe that has all the elements of an everyday wardrobe staple" says David Kent – Senior Product Manager, Lifestyle at New Balance.
Helping launch this revival is the White Marsh Green colorway, which boasts a wide-spaced mesh upper for breathability, adorned with silver and marsh green overlays on the toe, vamp, eyestays, and side panels. The prominent N logo in marsh green contrasts sharply against the clean white mesh and silver overlays, while the cream-colored lace set and sockliner add a touch of retro charm. This new iteration also sees a significant update in its sole unit, borrowing from the New Balance 530, which provides enhanced comfort and durability. The cream finish of the midsole paired with the green rubber outsole ensures this sneaker is stylish and functional, perfect for today's sneaker market.
The New Balance 740 White Marsh Green will release on October 16, 2024, through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. Available in unisex sizing, the retail price is set at $110.
