One of baseball’s most prolific players in the 90s, Ken Griffey Jr transcended more than just the sport of baseball and captivated millions with his home run prowess. While the latter parts of his career may not have produced the same results as his early days, many fans will recognize his time with the Cincinnati Reds as the tipping point for his superstar status. However, his signature silhouette with Nike, the Air Max Griffey 1 has just emerged in a Reds-inspired colorway.
Nubuck and leather take over the model with grey making up the majority of the upper while red shades accent throughout. Our first hit of this vibrant color appears via the Swoosh along the toebox which gets white embroidery around its edges, continuing this white color onto the tongue and lace set. For its lockdown strap, large “Nike” text stretches across the red nubuck and the Velcro strap features Griffey’s number 24 (even though he switched to the number 30 when he moved to the Reds). The thick padded sockliner nearby comes in white with Nike branding below on the red insole continuing this shade. Our final hits of color on the upper come via the Swoosh on the spine of the heel while the entire design is finished off by the white foam midsole with red accents and exposed Air units as well as a red/white rubber outsole.
The Nike Air Max Griffey 1 Cincinnati Reds Pure Platinum is set to release on March 30th, 2023 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store.
