Nike continues to dig into the archives with Air Max sneakers in 2023. After prepping the OG “Big Bubble” version of the silhouette in the classic “Sport Red” colorway and paying homage to 2003’s “Chili” with a slight tweak, we’re seeing even more early classics (somewhat) making a return. Looking back to 2004, Japan was given an exclusive colorway of the Nike Air Max 1 that paid homage to the Urawa Red Dragons, with 2023 set to feature a similar pair. This time, however, the color scheme gets an overhaul.
Taking on a mixture of leather and mesh across its upper, the Air Max 1 takes on a neutral color palette of grey, white, and black. Most of the sneaker gets covered in grey leather with white tumbled leather spotted on the vamp and black mesh acting as the underlay. Tonal white laces run up the grey tongue and rest below the red TPU eyelets and golden Nike Air text. Back on the heel, we see the same Urawa Red Dragons logo featured on the 2004 Japanese-exclusive pair embroidered in white. Our final nod to the team comes via the insole’s graphic that houses a co-branded Nike and Urawa Red Dragons logo. Finishing the design is the white Air Max 1 sole unit with a red Air bubble paired with a white rubber outsole.
The Nike Air Max 1 Urawa 2.0 will be released on October 3, 2023, through Nike and select NSW retailers online and in-store. Releasing in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $160.
