Nike and the Greek Freak (Giannis Antetokounmpo) have built a successful signature line with the Nike Zoom Freak series, currently on its fifth iteration. Throughout all of Giannis’ sneakers, personal themes from his life have impacted the design of colorways. For the Zoom Freak 5, we’ve already seen tributes to the Milwaukee Bucks and the neighborhoods in Athens, Sepolia, where he grew up. His family bond is now immortalized with the “Five The Hard Way” colorway.
The Nike Zoom Freak 5 Five The Hard Way pays tribute to the Antetokounmpo family, including Giannis' basketball-playing brothers Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex. Even more heartwarming, the names of Giannis' mother, Veronica, late father, Charles, girlfriend Mariah, sons Liam and Maverick, and older brother Francis are all debossed into the medial side of the sole unit. Design-wise, the sneaker is dressed in creamy shades accented by bursts of green, blue, and pink. Leather and mesh panels build up the upper in white, save for a blue leather heel tab. The green Swoosh on the midfoot blends seamlessly into the sole unit, echoing the colors on the medial side's Swoosh and eyestays. Giannis' logo is thoughtfully embroidered in green atop the tongue, matching the insole's emblem. Underfoot, a green and pink foam midsole sits adjacent to a blue hit on the medial side, complementing a semi-translucent green rubber outsole.
The Nike Zoom Freak 5 Five The Hard Way will release September 1, 2023, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men's sizing, the retail price is set at $130.
