Following up on their collaboration in 2019, Puma is partnering with Alexander John and Emory Jones on another Mixtape collection. John's Puma Mixtape series has brought in several other collaborators, while Jones is a longtime business partner of Jay-Z and the co-founder of Paper Planes. For their latest link-up, John and Jones take on Puma RS-X, two RS-XLs, and a Suede that all feature detailing calling back to the earlier days of hip-hop.
Leather and mesh in grey, white, black, and red cover one of Puma RS-XL's upper, with “Normal Bias” text appearing right in the middle of the upper. Translucent grey shanks show on the midfoot and heel with a graphic pulled from the reels of a cassette tape. Black leather trim is patterned much like the actual tape material in the cassette. Another text hit on the white midsole reads “D-C90” in black and lime green text matching one of the eyelets. Finishing off the shoe is a two-toned outsole made up of grey and gum. Sail and yellow leather bathe the second variation of the RS-XL, which is covered in graphic hits from a cassette player including including "repeat," "skip," and more.
The Puma RS-X takes on a much cleaner color palette. All white mesh and leather layer the upper with small detail hits of teal and royal blue found on the tongue, eyelet, pull tab, and toe stitching. Grey mesh on the back heel matches with translucent hits on the heel and mid foot, which feature an MP3 player navigation and repeat song button. White continues on the midsole with the only interruption being a blue download symbol. Sail and black split the outsole with a small hint of royal blue.
Two-tone takes over on the Puma Suede for the final piece of the collection. Black textured suede covers the upper, with a frosted ivory formstripe striking right through the middle. Frosted ivory also covers the entire toe, giving the sneaker a different look from the tonal toes the Suede typically features. White laces sit atop a black tongue, and the white tag features black and green branding. Wrapping up the design is a frosted ivory sole.
The Puma Alexander John and Emory Jones Mixtape collection is releasing July 14 via Foot Locker, online and in-store. Releasing in men’s sizing, the retail prices are $130 for the RS-X and RS-XLs, and $90 for the Suede.
